Treasure Island

With the advent of 3G high speed telecommunication networks, network providers are looking for “killer applications” that drive network traffic.

In the handphone space, application developers typically have few choices: The more popular one currently due to its smaller footprint and OEM popularity is J2ME ( Java 2 Micro Edition), a stripped down version of the JVM for mobile phones. The other popular choice is to develop for the Symbian OS, which is the smart phone OS used by majority of the smart phones today.

We came up with Treasure Island : An exciting location-based game that surrounds a person 24 hours of a day: A J2ME game that can be played by the mass market and potentially meet the demands of driving network traffic.

The aim of the game is to solve clues, the answers of which are the locations of commodity providers. An example of a clue could be “Simply Black”, which is Giordano's latest line of clothes. The user will win a voucher if he or she cracks the puzzle by identifying the store and going down to the particular outlet.

While solving the clues, brand slogans, tag lines and product descriptions remain in the gamer's mind, creating brand awareness. Hence, consenting partners mutually benefit from the arrangement: the firms from the high potential advertising agent, the consumers from the best deals and free vouchers.

Treasure Island has been packaged with a number of useful features such as a map navigation tool that helps a person locate his whereabouts on a map, and a team play option wherein the user can choose to enter a mission either with his friend or a random person. The two players can chat and join forces to solve the clues in a bid to be the fastest team to complete a mission. To ensure security while redeeming vouchers, a unique access code is sent to the gamers via SMS.

Owing to its dynamic content, this product could be a potential killer application in the mobile space. The missions, clues and vouchers can be changed fortnightly without having to redeploy the application, making it different from other games that are available on today's handphones.
