Your Home at the click of a button

At Imfinity, we wanted to come up with a product that harnesses the power of wireless technologies and the internet to simplify the day-to-day life of the consumer, by automating and remotely controlling his/her home. With this in mind, we came up with a Home Automation framework : a suite of web services which consume and interact with each other so as to export the end user's smart home to any application/service that needs to interact with the smart home in anyway.

The Home Automation framework is made up of the following web services –

The Home Automation framework stores a user's account profile. This profile includes a list of the user's homes and the list of smart devices in each home. Each device is associated with a list of possible statuses that the dev ice can attain, and the framework stores actions associated with the particular status. For example, a status for the smart CD player would be – “ End of track ”, while the corresponding action associated with this status would be – “ Play again from beginning ”. More than one action can be associated with a particular status, and the appropriate action is chosen by the Home Automation framework, based on user preferences.

The information stored above is exposed through XML web services, which can be consumed by external applications. Great care has been taken to make the web services generic so as to cater to almost any type of smart dev ice. Privacy issues have been considered carefully and at all times, the user has full control on who has the right to access information about his/her home.

The MyHomes web service contains the details of the user's home, devices and their corresponding statuses and actions. The MyShops web service contains details of shops, their geographical locations and the nature of the products sold, as well as extra information unique to each shop. Authentication web service is used to identify and verify the user, SMS and Email web services are used to communicate with the user. The HTML to WML conversion web service is used to serve the web interface of the applications using the Home Automation Framework on WAP-enabled phones and other mobile devices.
